Cleverly ‘no possibility with Hopkins’

Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe fought in Las Vegas in Apr 2008
Joe Calzaghe has warned WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly to forget about a joint showdown with American good Bernard Hopkins.
The former two-weight universe champion insists Hopkins, who celebrates his 47th birthday subsequent week, wants a big-name opposition for a large final payday.
And Calzaghe insists he will not answer Hopkins’ call to lapse to boxing after timid undefeated in Feb 2009.
“I don’t consider he has any goal of fighting Nathan,” pronounced Calzaghe.
Cleverly will urge his WBO climax for a third time opposite ‘unknown’ American Tommy Karpency in his Welsh homecoming on 25 Feb though a 24-year-old wants a summer joint uncover with WBC champion Hopkins or WBA title-holder Beibut Shumenov.
“Bernard Hopkins is a 46-year-old male looking for a big, large payday opposite a big-name fighter,” Calzaghe told BBC Radio Wales’ Back Page show.
“Hopkins will usually quarrel if he gets a large payday and a large name.
“Nathan is in a early partial of his career and I’m not certain we can build that quarrel up. He is not famous in America.

“And Nathan, who is an up-and-coming fighter, is too dangerous for Hopkins.”
Calzaghe kick Hopkins on a quarrelsome separate points preference in Las Vegas in Apr 2008 only hours after Calzaghe’s associate Welshman Cleverly kick American Antonio Baker during The Thomas and Mack Center.
Cleverly afterwards lerned alongside coach Calzaghe during Enzo Calzaghe’s famous gym in a Gwent valleys and was a undisputed super-middleweight champion’s ring partner forward of that Hopkins showdown in a United States.
A Hopkins v Cleverly strife seemed to be edging closer when it was reported Hopkins did not wish a rematch of his argumentative WBC pretension quarrel with Chad Dawson.
But Calzaghe thinks that is doubtful – and a former Ring Magazine light-heavyweight champion, who turns 40 in March, insists he is facing calls to come behind and take on Hopkins again.
“I consider he’s only carrying a bit of fun,” pronounced Calzaghe.
“I spoke to him not prolonged ago and pronounced I’m not entrance out of retirement.
“It was utterly humorous as he was seeking me to come behind and quarrel and we suggested a 60/40 separate and that shortly close him right up.
“It was all in good humour. But I’m 3 years out of a ring and I’m finished with boxing.”
Cleverly has certified Karpency was not his initial choice competition as he wanted a joint shot.
But Calzaghe warned a immature champion that had to wait 9 years between winning a WBO super-middleweight pretension opposite Chris Eubank in 1997 and unifying a multiplication by defeating Jeff Lacy in 2006.
“I found it formidable to get a joint quarrel and when someone else is champion, it is formidable to discount with them as they wish some-more income and they wish we to go to their behind yard,” pronounced Calzaghe
“So it is distinct that Nathan wants to quarrel in his home-town.
“Nathan is still really young, in a early stages of his power and he will keep improving as he gets some-more knowledge of universe pretension fights.
“I’ve never listened of his opponent. Sometimes we fought guys we have never listened of and we can’t under-estimate them, we contingency do your pursuit and hit a other man out.”
